COMPARE AND CONTRAST

Định nghĩa

“To compare”

Là chỉ ra sự giống nhau giữa hai vấn đề

“To contrast”

Là chỉ ra điểm khác nhau. Thế nên viết một bài luận so sánh và đối chiếu có nghĩa là phải chỉ ra sự giống và khác nhau giữa hai vấn đề.

Bài luận so sánh đối chiếu có ít nhất hai kiểu cấu trúc:

Block organization

Point by point organization.

Ở dạng cấu trúc block, các ý diễn đạt sự giống nhau tạo thành luận điểm thứ nhất, các ý diễn đạt sự khác nhau làm nên luận điểm thứ hai. Ngược lại, dạng cấu trúc Point by point các luận điểm được phân bổ một cách độc lập.

Dàn bài chung

Sẽ bao gồm Introduction (mở bài), Body (thân bài) và Conclusion (kết bài)

Một số cấu trúc thường dùng cho dạng đề Compare and Contrast:

SIMILARITIES

(A) and (B) are the same/ alive/ similar in that + S + V

-Similarly, S + V….

-In the same way, S+ V….

-Likewise, S + V...

DIFFERENCES

-On the one hand, S1 + V1… On the other hand, S2 + V2

-Conversely/ However/ In contrast, S + V…

-S1 + V2…, whereas S2 + V2….

1.Introduction

Sau khi giới thiệu ngắn gọn về chủ đề, ta sẽ nêu lên ý kiến của bản thân về chủ đề đó, và thường trong 1 câu duy nhất. Câu này được gọi là luận điểm (thesis statement). Thường là một câu duy nhất ở đoạn đầu tiên của bài văn, cho thấy lập trường câu bạn về vấn đề. Phần còn lại câu bài sẽ tổng hợp và sắp xếp thông tin,dẫn chứng để thuyết phục người đọc theo cách logic, cách hiểu của bạn. Hãy đảm bảo rằng luận điểm của bạn rõ ràng, dễ hiểu.

Ví dụ: Write an essay comparing and contrasting the city dwellers and the country dwellers

=> City dwellers and country dwellers have familiar traditional cultures and develop history; they also live in a country. Although there are several similarities between city dwellers and country dwellers, there are also some very important differences so that city residents and country residents have differentiation obviously

2.Body

Chỉ ra các điểm giống và khác nhau và đưa ra ví dụ một cách cụ thể.

Ví dụ: It is often cited that “Not everything that is learned is contained in books”. According to many, we learn most of the things from our own experience while others believe that books are our main source of knowledge. Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?

=> “First and foremost, before an individual is able to read and write, one must obtain knowledge through life experiences. For example, children begin to learn right from the day they are born. A child learns how to sit, stand, develop a sense to distinguish the right from the wrong and so on. This learning experience is necessary for the child’s development.

Secondly, as the child grows, he/she develops qualities such as compassion, empathy, friendliness and so on. These qualities are not learned in books but can only be obtained through life experiences.

On the other hand, formal education is obtained by attending classes and reading books. This aspect of learning is equally important for an individual’s future career. For instance, as a doctor, I am only able to keep myself updated by reading up on various changes on diagnosis and management of various diseases so as to offer my patients comprehensive care.”

3.Conclusion

Paraphrase lại câu chủ đề, nêu ra được điểm chính của sự giống và khác nhau giữa các phần của topic. Có thể nêu thêm ý kiến của bản thân

=>To sum up, whatever we study in a book is as important as learning through experience. It has been proven that both are very important for learning. Thus, it is recommended that knowledge gained from books or experience is never useless it will help us somewhere in our future life so keep learning.
